BABY DRIVER – review

BABY DRIVER

With Director Edgar Wright bringing us a Caper flick with some great music and some amazing chase scenes.  Wright who brought us the Great movies “Shaun of the Dead”, “The World’s End”, and “Hot Fuzz”, all are amazing, and you can watch them over and over again.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is an amazing getaway driver, yes he is just a kid, but all he needs is his sunglasses, and his music and he can get you out of any situation when he is behind the wheel.  I loved that we could always hear what Baby is listening too, kind of like a sound track to his life we are watching on the big screen.

Doc (Kevin Spacey) is the crime boss who has a different team for every job except he uses Baby for all jobs.  With Baby listening to his music while Doc goes over the plan, the teams usually don’t have too much faith in Baby’s ability, but Doc always makes it clear Baby is the driver.  From the first scene of the movie we all know why he is the driver, and how well he does the driving.

Baby does fall for a waitress Deborah (Lily James), who also loves music, and Baby eats in the diner Deborah works in.  Deborah really wants to escape her life and hit the road, which of course Baby wants to help her get out, but he owes Doc, and can’t leave his Driving Job not yet.

Like all Caper flicks, there is one last heist that Baby has to work, but this time it is with what I would call Doc’s all star team.  Buddy (Jon Hamm) who has a very interesting back story (yes, I am not going to spoil any of this flick), his way younger girlfriend Darling (Eiza Gonzalez), and the main thug of the team Bats (Jamie Foxx) who is always angry.  We do learn Baby’s back ground as well.

What I loved about this flick is that it never slows down; Wright grabs you out of your seat from the opening of the flick, and takes you on a high speed chase full of fun and entertaining time.  Try not to think about any of it, this is not a flick to try and figure out, more a flick to sit in the back seat and let Baby drive you as fast as he can.

I grade BABY DRIVER a 4 ½ Stars out of 5.  Go see this flick and have as much fun as my daughter and I did.
