1984 brought us the best Rockumentary of my childhood with Spinal Tap.  I still love Spinal Tap, and really didn’t know what to expect with PopStar.  The Lonely Island group has been bringing us some great Mock songs and videos since 2005 on Saturday Night Live.  Lonely consists of Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg. I have enjoyed all of their music, their album, and all the video;s from Saturday Night Live, I was just worried 84 minutes would be too much time for them to fill.  I was Wrong!!!images-29

Andy, Akiva, and Jorma are childhood friends, and they bring us a hilarious Mockumentary!  This is Spinal Tap on crack it is so funny I cried through-out some of the songs, and the CMZ mocks are instant classic bits.  I was worried in the first 20 minutes because I thought it would be a sketch- comedy that we have seen before and was going to get old.  Again, I was wrong, it becomes one of the funniest (improv) flicks I have ever seen.  imgres-33

Maybe I have been hit with too many very bad comedies with Zealander 2, Dumb and Dumber, and the last 2 Hangovers and just walked into Popstar was going to be too much on the stupid and not enough Funny.  It did have a lot of Stupid, but a lot of Funny as well.  images-31

Andy is Conner4Real who has left the boy band he formed with his friends from childhood, and has become a Justin Bieber type PopStar.  His Friends and former band mates from the group The Style Boyz included Jorma as Lawrence who we soon learn wrote most of the words to all the songs while Akiva is DJ Owen who is the man behind the beats.   imgres-32

The problem we soon learn is Conner4Real has gotten too big for his britches, and he is going to fall and fall hard.  We have a great scene where they make fun of U2.  Remember how U2 put all the songs on our iPhone updates, well Conner out does them for sure.  No Spoilers here you will have to see it way too funny.  images-30

The new songs which Include Equal Rights, I’m So Humble, and Bin Laden, are hilarious.  With Equal Rights pay attention to how many times he says Not Gay… They made this flick to mock Justin Bieber’s Rockumentary, you can tell from the beginning when we see Conner playing the drums at a young age.

This flick is a must see, not really for young kids, but really really funny.  Lots of Cameos, and the CMZ parody is hilarious.  I am not going to give anything away, but I will call this Spinal Tap for a new Generation!  I grade PopStar an A.  I loved this flick, and can’t wait to see it again.
