HAIL, CAESAR ! – review

The Coen brothers have brought us some great flicks, I was very excited to see the latest comedy from these two.  They have brought us a comedy that plays tribute to the Old Time movies and with the amazing cast how could it be a bad flick.  hail5

I was a little nervous when the flick was being released in February, when most of these flicks are not that great.  The flick starts with Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), who is the head for Capital Pictures.  Capital Pictures is in the middle of filming a big Biblical flick with Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), a Western with Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich), a water musical with DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson) who is acting just like Esther Williams, and a dance flick with Burt Gurney (Channing Tatum).  hail3

With all these great stars playing old time film stars how could this flick go wrong?  I will tell you, the story is not that great, it is ok, but not great.  We have everything we need, religious jokes, a kidnapping, and even some 50’s political humor.  Eddie is also trying to quit smoking, but is lying to his wife which makes him go to confessional everyday.  I did laugh in the flick, just not as much as I do at most Cohen brother flicks.

hail2I think my main problem with the flick is that it is a let down when you talk Cohen brother comedy.  I Love The Big Lebowski, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and of course Raising Arizona, but this flick ranks above Burn After Reading and Intolerable Cruelty but below the other flicks.  Clooney is great playing a not so smart actor, Tatum is not in it too much but his song and dance scene is amazing.

The plot in this flick has me grade it a C+, the pacing is off as well.  It is a little slow at points, but there are some funny parts.  If you like Cohen brother flick you will enjoy it, but not love it.
