    Don’t have a favorite line

  2. Angela says:

I like lines that set tones, and the first line does that well. “Call me Ishmael.”

  3. lonnie says:

There is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness.

  4. Robyn B. says:

‘Moby Dick seeks thee not. It is thou, thou that madly seeks him.’ This is one of my favorite lines because it is Starbucks last attempt to convince Ahab of his obsession with the whale. He’s trying to save Ahab from himself.

  5. Brian says:

“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody’s expense but his own.”

Because it is true of life even after these decades.

  6. Leslie Kiley says:

“It is not down on any map; true places never are.”

    ‘Moby Dick seeks thee not.

“He looked like a man cut away from the stake, when the fire has overrunningly wasted all the limbs without consuming them, or taking away one particle from their compacted aged robustness”.

    You meet Ahab

  9. Jennie Bogovich says:

“Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I’d strike the sun if it insulted me.”

Ignorance is the parent of fear. —- I think that needs no explanation why since once you have knowledge you can fear less.

  19. Jan Hutchinson says:

Captain Ahab, “Sleep? That bed is a coffin and those are winding sheets. I do not sleep; I die.” I admit that I looked up quotes to find that. This one stood out since I have a terrible time sleeping. It’s 2am and I’m entering the contest to go see Ron Howard’s version.

  20. Donna says:

“Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I’d strike the sun if it insulted me.”

  21. Donna L says:

“Think not, is my eleventh commandment; and sleep when you can, is my twelfth.”
I think a lot of people make up their own commandments; either good or bad.

  22. Will says:

“I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote.”

As for me, I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts. Travel and Adventure is available to all.

  28. Barbara says:

“I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I’ll go to it laughing.”

I like it because it encourages optimism when facing the unknown.

Sink all coffins and hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!'”

This quote represents the power of vengeance, obsession and despair.

  44. Jo says:

I have no objection to any person’s religion, be it what it may, so long as that person does not kill or insult any other person, because that other person don’t believe it also. But when a man’s religion becomes really frantic; when it is a positive torment to him; and, in fine, makes this earth of ours an uncomfortable inn to lodge in; then I think it high time to take that individual aside and argue the point with him.

  45. Carl says:

Better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian.
