THE VISIT – review

The newest movie coming from M. Night Shyamalan called The Visit is something a little different as far as horror films go. Listed as a comedy/horror film with the website, you have to wonder what you are getting into going to this movie. I was prepared for just about anything, I was very surprised. visit6

Starting out we meet mom, played by Kathryn Hahn, who is staring in her daughters documentary about her own life. Mom grew up in a very small town and as she got older met an older guy. She fell in love with the guy and decided to get married and leave to start her life at the age of 19. Her parents were not happy with this decision and tried to stop her. That ended their relationship and she has  not spoken to them in 15 years. Since that time she married the older guy and had 2 children, a daughter Becca, played by Olivia DeJonge, and a son Tyler, played by Ed Oxenbould. The husband has also since moved on himself and found someone new leaving Mom and the kids on their own. Recently Nana, played by Deanna Dunagan and Pop Pop, played by Peter McRobbie, reached out to Mom and told her they would love to meet their grandchildren.visit2

Mom said no, she wasn’t going to agree to that. Becca and Tyler disagree. Mom has finally met someone new and he is hopelessly in love with her. They feel like the only thing stopping her is them. So they agree to go for one week to stay with Nana and Pop Pop while mom leaves to go on a cruise with her boyfriend. Mom puts the kids on a train and they are off to see their grandparents. visit5

When they arrive Nana and Pop Pop are waiting with a sign and snacks to greet them at the train station. Everyone seems very excited and happy to meet. They ride home and hear a few stories about the town. They are thrilled to walk in the house and see all the things their mom had described to them in stories of her childhood. They are shown to their room, which they share, and given just a little bit of instruction from Pop Pop. He explains that they are old and they go to bed at 9:30, stay in your room after 9:30, Oh and there’s mold in the basement so don’t go down their either. The kids settle in for the first night and quickly see that 9:30 is very early for them. Becca decides she is going to sneak downstairs and grab one of those cookies that Nana made for them. One her way down the stairs she hears something and looks to find Nana getting sick downstairs. She quickly runs back to her room and shuts the door. The next morning she talks to Pop Pop and he tells her Nana was simply not feeling good and had a 24 hour bug. As the week continues Nana and Pop Pop’s behavior continues to become more and more strange. Luckily for all of us, Becca and Tyler continue to film and document the entire trip so you don’t miss all the strange behaviors…visit1

One thing I want to be sure to include is that this entire movie is filmed by Becca and Tyler and their handheld cameras. I am not one to handle this type of movie but I have to say this movie didn’t bother me in the least. I was laughing and jumping and yelling at all the right places. This was a good movie. Something different, something to settle in and just enjoy the ride it takes you on. If you have a few friends or a date I would say this would be my movie choice for the weekend. Give The Visit a chance I’m sure you’ll be surprise! I grade THE VISIT a Solid B+ it is a fun comedy/ horror flick.
